SPECIAL SECTION: MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES
REPORTS AND PROCEEDINGS
Monoclonal antibodies have been the subject of a variety of discussions and meetings, including four major scientific conferences since 1996. Though the meetings differed somewhat in purpose and composition, they mostly agreed in their conclusions: (1) the ascites method of MABs production is associated with pain and distress for the animals; (2) a wide variety of in vitro methods now are available that can produce MABs of comparable quality, quantity, and cost to the ascities method; and (3) these in vitro methods should be used whenever possible. The full discussions and conclusions are presented in the readings that follow.
