German Scientist Receives 1997 Hegarty Award for In Vitro Phototoxicity Research

April 8, 1998

The British animal welfare organization, Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME), awarded its annual Dorothy Hegarty Award to Hermann-Georg Holzhutter from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.

Holzhutter won the award for his paper, "A General Measure of In Vitro Phototoxicity Derived from Pairs of Dose-Response Curves and its Use for Predicting the In Vivo Phototoxicity of Chemicals."

The award is presented annually to the author(s) of the paper published in the previous year's volume of FRAME's scientific journal, Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (ATLA), which, in the opinion of the editors and the editorial board, is "likely to make the most significant contribution to the reduction, refinement, and/or replacement of animal experimentation."

The award was established in 1995 in memory of Dorothy Hegarty, FRAME's founder, who worked ceaselessly to improve the welfare of laboratory animals. Previous winners were Laura Babcock et al. (Cincinnati, OH); Coenraad Hendriksen and Johan van der Gun (Bilthoven, The Netherlands); and Michael Gulden et al. (Kiel, Germany).
