ILAR Publishes New Nonhuman Primate Guide
November 12, 1998
The National Academy of Sciences Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR) recently published "The Psychological Well-Being of Nonhuman Primates." According to the NAS Web Site, "a 1995 amendment to the Animal Welfare Act requires those who keep nonhuman primates to develop and follow appropriate plans for promoting the animals' psychological well-being. The amendment, however, provides few specifics--that's where this book can help. The (guide) offers practical approaches to meeting those requirements. It focuses on what is known about the psychological needs of primates and makes suggestions for assessing and promoting their well-being."
The guide is the latest in a long series of reports prepared by ILAR to assist researchers meet the requirements of the AWA and provide for the well-being of laboratory animals in their care. (The one most researchers are familiar with is the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.)
"The Psychological Well-Being of Nonhuman Primates" is available, for free, online at the NAS site or in book form for $28 (if you order it from the NAS site). To order or read the book, go here.
