New Web Site Promotes Non-animal Alternatives in the Classroom

December 4, 2001

InterNICHE, the International Network for Humane Education, has launched a new web site to provide news and comprehensive information on alternatives to the use of animals in education. The url is http://www.interniche.org.

InterNICHE is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote progressive science teaching and the replacement of animal experiments by working with teachers to introduce alternatives and with students to support freedom of conscience. The organization began in 1988 as EuroNICHE (European Network of Individuals and Campaigns for Humane Education) and expanded to a fully global network in 2000, with contacts in more than 30 countries worldwide.

The new web site is aimed at teachers and students of biological science, veterinary and human medicine, as well as university ethics committee or animal care and use committee members, legislators, and animal welfare advocates. An Alternatives Loan System offers a wide range of products for free international loan. These alternatives include multimedia CD-ROMs, videos, models and mannequins and cover such fields as anatomy, physiology, and surgery. A 33-minute InterNICHE video, "Alternatives in Education," features a range of products and approaches being demonstrated by the teachers who use them within anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and surgery training. The video is available in 14 languages.

Translations of the web site into other languages are planned.
