FUNDING OPPORTUNITY - New Grant Applications INVITED NOW The Dr Hadwen Trust is currently inviting new grant applications for research proposals to develop, validate or implement non-animal methods which contribute to the replacement of animal experiments in medical research. We have a total budget of £400,000 on offer for proposals directed at replacing the use of living animals in current procedures. For fuller details click here: Research which requires or involves the use of living animals in any way, even though the ultimate aim may be to replace their use, will not be supported. Neither do we offer grants for research which uses (non-human) animal cells, animal tissues or animal cell lines. Acceptable approaches may include human cells, human cell lines, human tissues, micro-organisms, human sub-cellular components, in vitro techniques, physico-chemical techniques, computer modelling, clinical studies or epidemiology.Proposals to replace animals in all areas of medical research are welcome. Priority will be given to proposals that aim to replace procedures on animals that can cause substantial pain and suffering, and/or have the potential to replace large numbers of animals. On this occasion The Dr Hadwen Trust is especially (but not solely) interested in the following topics:
- Tissue engineering and advanced cell culture techniques
- Computer modelling
- Systems biology
- Disease models
- Research into Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease
- Infectious diseases
- Cancer research
- Cardiovascular research
- Replacement of animal antibodies
- Replacement of animal serum in research or methods to promote the replacement of animal serum.
However, proposals in other research fields are also welcome, if they have the potential to replace animal experiments.Grants are available for a maximum of £45,000 per annum for up to 3 years, inclusive of salary, consumables and equipment (i.e. awards will not exceed £135,000 over 3 years). Grants for research proposals of shorter duration than 3 years will be considered pro rata. Applications for one year pilot studies at a maximum of £45,000 are also welcome. As a registered charity we do not award full economic costing and only provide funds for direct research costs. SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION Our application procedure has two stages. This is a call for preliminary applications which must be submitted by Monday 30th November 2009. Please use the Guidelines below to submit a preliminary application. Selected preliminary applicants will subsequently be invited to submit full applications. Please ensure you read the policy information on our website carefully and note that we only fund non-animal research that has the potential to replace procedures on living animals. http://www.scienceroom.org/apply-for-funding Preliminary Application Guidelines Your brief preliminary application should consist of not more than two or three A4 pages and must provide the following information: - Brief background to the research
- Outline of proposed plan of investigation, including one-, two, and three year studies.
- The nature of the animal experiments which would be replaced if the project were successful (include species of animals, extent of use, severity of procedures).
- Present or previous source of funding for this research programme, if any.
- Type and amount of funding sought and why it is needed.
You must also send a short CV with details of posts held, present research funding, and references to or any reprints of any relevant recent publications. Receipt of all preliminary applications will be acknowledged. If your preliminary application is of interest to the Dr Hadwen Trust, then you will be invited to submit a full research grant application in due course. Full application forms and full policy documents will be sent to you at that time.
