RSPCA/AHVLA Scientific Meeting on Welfare of Agricultural Animals in Research: Cattle, Goats, Pigs, and SheepWednesday, June 26, 2013 Southern England Aim of the meeting: To bring together animal technologists, researchers, veterinarians and students with an interest in the welfare of cattle, goats, pig and sheep used in research and testing for a programme of talks and discussion sessions, and opportunities to make contacts and to share ideas and experiences. Talks will address a range of welfarerelated topics including: cognition and emotions in farm animals; welfare issues associated with restricted environments; clicker training; pain assessment and alleviation; recent recommendations on harmonising farm animal care and use; assessing actual severity and considering the lifetime experiences of cattle, goats, pigs and sheep. Delegates will be able to choose the afternoon discussion session topics, such as whether a UK network is needed for those using and caring for agricultural animals; assessing and alleviating suffering; the role of the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) in refinement; and whether there are issues with training or demonstrating competence (as required by the revised ASPA) when working with agricultural animals. There will also be a poster session and the IAT has allocated 4 CPD points for the meeting. The registration cost is £60, which covers lunch and refreshments.
