Research Animal Welfare: What's Current, New and Changing
Co-sponsored with The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare/NIH/DHHS and The United States Department of Agriculture/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Animal Care
Training is an important aspect for all members of the animal research community. Training is recommended by several regulatory and accreditation organizations and is an excellent way to ensure that research animals receive the best care and treatment based on performance standards. SCAW’s Winter Conference, held in beautiful downtown San Antonio on December 3-4, 2012, will provide an opportunity for members of the animal care community to learn about new techniques and to discuss current issues. For example, This Conference will help meet the requirement stated in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals 8th edition, 2011 that states “All personnel involved with the care and use of animals must be adequately educated, trained, and/or qualified in basic principles of laboratory animal science to help ensure high-quality science and animal well-being”. It will also address USDA/APHIS/AC Policy 15.
As a bonus, the historic Menger Hotel is the site for this conference. It is an old historic building in the center of San Antonio and is only minutes from the famous Alamo and Riverwalk where post-meeting time can be spent shopping or dining at many fine restaurants. At this time of year the Riverwalk is decorated with luminaria which adds to the charm of this unique area.
