Swiss Ban on Animal-Tested Cosm​etics Goes Into Effect

The Swiss government has officially banned the sale of cosmetics containing ingredients tested on animals.

The ban, which was first announced in March last year, aligns the country’s law with EU rules.

“This move is the next step in our 20-year campaign to end cruel animal testing everywhere and forever,” Michelle Thew, CEO of Cruelty Free International, said. “With no similar measures in place, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Russia and the US are falling behind.”

The NGO says that in addition to all 28 EU member states and Switzerland, India, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan have banned animal testing for cosmetics.

Earlier this month, the Dutch government announced its aim to phase out all animal testing for research on the safety of chemicals by 2025.
