Dorothy Hegarty, Founder of FRAME, died in August 1995 at the age of 84. The crucial role she played in defining the concept of replacement alternatives to laboratory animal procedures, and in securing its acceptance by the scientific and animal welfare communities and into national and international legislation, is examined through the recollections and assessments of some of those who knew her and worked with or for her.
