Pain-Related Internet Resources for IACUC's

Ken Boschert, DVM
Division of Comparative Medicine, Washington University

The Internet, primarily through the proliferation of the World Wide Web, has become the medium by which many groups and individuals disseminate information and provide forums of discussion on a seemingly limitless number of topics. Every Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee must address issues involving pain as it may apply to various animal experimental protocols. It is to each IACUC member's advantage to be familiar with those Internet resources which may provide knowledge about pain, its assessment, management, and physiology.

Approximately 400 web-based resources relevant to pain or IACUC's are referenced below. This collection of links attempts to provide those interested with an overview of some of the best information currently available on the Internet. The categories of resources listed include: major neuroscience directories, resource references, journals, meetings, government agencies and regulations, anesthesia and analgesia, academic departments, institutional animal care and use committees, animal behavior, ethics and alternatives to animal testing, commercial resources, as well as pain societies and animal research organizations.

As scientific knowledge advances our understanding of pain and its many facets, the Internet will continue to play an increasingly important role as a source of data and a method of knowledge exchange. There is great potential to benefit both human and experimental animal care and well-being as information becomes more widely available and more effectively transmitted in a wealth of media-rich and searchable formats.

By it's nature, information on the web does change rapidly. Over time link addresses will change and new sites will be created. In order to serve as a better document, the most current version of these resources will be available on the Internet here.
